Lost / The Lost: An Introduction

Changelings, also known as the Lost, are humans who were abducted by the Fae. Unlike most who suffer this fate, the Lost have managed to find their way back through the Hedge to the mortal world, but their time in the Faerie realm has irrevocably changed their bodies, minds and souls. A Changeling's true, inhuman mien is hidden by the Mask, the aspect of Fae magic that makes Faerie creatures and artifacts seem mundane to mortal eyes, but very few Changelings are able to reclaim their old lives, or make entirely new ones, without retaining ties to the fae realm.

Welcome! / About Us
« on: 2015-03-25 12:09:57 PM »
What Was is a collaborative writing and roleplaying forum based around White Wolf's World of Darkness. Specifically, we focus on vampire politics in an overpopulated, lawless Los Angeles while waiting for the world to end.

If you're new to the setting, never fear! I aim to provide any information you need on the board itself, as clearly and concisely as possible, so you can focus on telling stories and adding to our world. If you have any questions we'll be happy to help out and expand those docs as necessary.

If you're an old WoDhead, welcome! We're not oWoD, nWoD, or V20, but something in-between, as I've tried to cherry-pick the pieces that make for the most interesting modern nights. You'll not be filling out character sheets or tracking blood pools here, but you're welcome to help us create all the vast conspiracies and dark milieus your heart desires.

Quote from: Johannes Parvus
Bernard of Chartres used to compare us to [puny] dwarfs perched on the shoulders of giants. He pointed out that we see more and farther than our predecessors, not because we have keener vision or greater height, but because we are lifted up and borne aloft on their gigantic stature.

Kindred / Vampire Clans
« on: 2015-03-13 09:50:57 AM »
In the first nights, so sires tell their childer, the 13 grandchilder of Caine who survived the strife of the First City begot progeny in their own images, passing on their mystic arts and magical curses. Thus were founded the 13 great clans of Kindred that haunt the world to this very night. Century followed century, and each clan developed its own history, traditions and lore. As the Jyhad raged and the Antediluvians retreated into the wastelands, the childer of the clans assumed lordship of the night for themselves.

Here we present the 13 Clans - each claiming descent from a mythical Antediluvian - that comprise the majority of the Children of Caine. Because the Clans by and large align themselves by sect, they are presented so here. Please note, however, that most vampires of Los Angeles have strayed from sect politics and consider themselves Anarchs or Independents, and it'd most likely be wise for those who are agents to the Camarilla or Sabbat to keep that knowledge to themselves.

Each Clan has certain distinguishing strengths and weaknesses, which a member of that Clan is automatically assumed to adopt. While the weakness is a thing of blood, present from the first night a childe is embraced, the Clan strength is practiced and learned. It is possible for vampires to learn the strengths of other clans, or other powers beyond those listed here; if applicable, please note such knowledge the character's application.

Brujah - rabble, rebels
Gangrel - outlanders
Malkavian - lunatics
Nosferatu - sewer rats
Toreador - degenerates
Tremere - warlocks
Ventrue - blue bloods

Lasombra - keepers
Tzimisce - fiends

Assamite - assassins
Followers of Set - serpents, seducers
Giovanni - necromancers
Ravnos - deceivers

Caitiff - trash

Kindred / Vampire Sects
« on: 2015-03-12 11:16:39 PM »
Sects are groups of vampires and clans that supposedly share a common ideology. They are a modern contrivance, but an important one. Sects as they are known in these nights first surfaced after the Great Anarch Revolt, a continent-wide upheaval which took place in Europe during the 15th century. Many elders accept sect membership grudgingly, deriding sects as "foolishness - the Blood is all that matters." In night before the Great Anarch Revolt and the Inquisition, these elders claim, there were no sects at all. Other vampires argue that this is still true - a vampire in a sizable city may go a decade or more without ever seeing another Kindred, so of what use is a sect?

Regardless, most vampires belong to one sect or another; others claim independence, no preference, or that they are affiliated with their clan, not a sect. The sect known as the Camarilla is arguably the largest and most prevalent, though its rival the Sabbat has recently made considerable inroads against it and still opposes the Camarilla at every turn. The secretive Inconnu, when it may be reached for comment, maintains that it is not a sect, although it seems to be organized and manages to steer clear of the other sects. On the opposite side of the coin, the anarchs make much show of pretending to be a sect, though they are the first to enlist Camarilla aid when the Sabbat appears at a city's borders. Thus, the Camarilla considers the anarchs to be under its purview.

Dossier: Provide a short summary of this character - information that would be available to anyone who did a day's worth of digging via internet searches, asking around, etc. You are welcome to include rumours, speculation, and otherwise inaccurate information. This is in-character information designed to provide other writers with ideas for when, where, why, and how their characters might come into contact with this one.

Sample: Write a short scene from the perspective of this character; it can be an everynight occurrence or a significant event. I'm not interested in judging your writing, but I do want to get a sense for what this character will be like. You are welcome to re-use this sample for a future thread.

Notes: This is your chance to establish any other crucial facts or information prior to this character entering play. This is mostly important for characters whose dossier is empty, vague, or misleading. If your character is secretly Count Dracula, let me know up front so that you won't be asked to edit critical information later.

Domain: Powerful and/or influential creatures of the night often claim some territory as their domain. Anything larger than three square blocks typically comes with a title and a coterie, gang, or small army to defend it.

Face Claim: You are not required to use a face claim, but specify one here if you do. If you use art, please try to match the style of the board and provide attribution here instead.
